The State of the City: Insights and Opportunities for Auckland
The Committee for Auckland has enlisted the expertise of the London-based The Business of Cities (BoC) to produce the first comprehensive international benchmarking report about Auckland. In partnership with Deloitte and Tātaki Auckland Unlimited, with support from Koi Tū: The Centre for Informed Futures at Auckland University and the NZ Government Auckland Policy Office, this initiative aims to assess Auckland’s performance against key pillars of liveable cities.
This in-depth analysis will present valuable insights into Auckland’s performance and highlights key areas of opportunity for the city assessed against nine core comparable international cities supplemented with data from selected reference cities. Leveraging data from over 700 data points, the report offers extensive insights into various aspects of Auckland’s performance.
The State of the City project aligns with the Reimagining Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland report delivered last year by Koi Tū. This report highlighted the vital importance Auckland has to New Zealand, with nearly 40% of the country’s GDP produced in the region and acknowledging the gateway role it plays for tourism and acquisition of new capability. It also said that substantial change was needed to get much greater alignment on the long-term vision and priorities in order for Auckland to make more consistent progress. The State of the City report can help address this.
The report will identify what are considered Auckland’s assets on the international stage, but also areas for improvement and greater investment. It aims to focus on areas of interest to Auckland’s citizens, and it will boost Auckland’s international visibility and profile, highlighting the unique cultural backdrop of the city.
Other international surveys about Auckland can provide valuable insights, but they often fail to capture the complete picture of the region. This annual benchmarking project aims to rectify this by providing a comprehensive assessment of Auckland’s strengths, areas of improvement, and opportunities for collaboration.
The State of the City report can serve as a guiding tool for our collective efforts in shaping the future of Auckland. By leveraging the city’s strengths and addressing areas that require improvement, we aim to unlock Auckland’s full potential. Auckland’s first State of the City report will be released in early-August.
