Committee for Auckland hosted a special address by Hon Chris Bishop, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure, RMA Reform and Transport, bringing together leaders from business, local government and the community to discuss Auckland’s growth priorities.
Speaking at the newly opened New Zealand International Convention Centre, the Minister announced a reset of the Government’s approach to housing intensification in Auckland, confirming Cabinet has agreed to reduce the city’s minimum housing capacity requirement from approximately two million dwellings to 1.6 million.
The Minister said the change responds to strong feedback from Aucklanders and is intended to provide greater flexibility for Auckland Council, while still enabling sufficient housing capacity to support growth and affordability.
Importantly, the Government reaffirmed its commitment to intensification in areas best supported by infrastructure and transport. Higher density development will continue to be enabled around City Rail Link stations, rapid transit corridors, major town centres and metropolitan centres, ensuring growth is focused where it delivers the greatest economic and urban benefits.
The Minister also announced that Cabinet has agreed to begin an investigation into planning provisions constraining development in Auckland’s city centre, with the aim of unlocking further housing capacity in the CBD. Any additional capacity enabled would be included within the revised 1.6 million dwelling requirement.
Rupert Hodson, Committee for Auckland Executive Director, said the discussion highlighted the value of bringing decision makers and city leaders together at key moments for Auckland’s future.
“Auckland’s growth challenges require informed dialogue and coordinated action. Committee for Auckland exists to convene these conversations and support progress on the issues that matter most to the city”
Committee for Auckland continues to provide a platform for constructive engagement on Auckland’s most significant opportunities and challenges. Members and stakeholders are encouraged to stay connected for upcoming events and discussions shaping Auckland’s future.
