Auckland needs an aspirational story to shape our future
By Rupert Hodson, Executive Director, Committee for Auckland
Auckland’s story matters, not just to those of us who call it home, but to the prosperity of all New Zealanders.
Home to over a third of New Zealand’s people and generating almost 40 percent of national GDP, Auckland is our country’s economic and cultural engine. Yet too often, the headlines tell a story of decline: crime, congestion, stalled infrastructure and rising costs, rather than progress, innovation, and potential.
That narrative matters. It shapes how we see ourselves and how the world sees us. When negativity dominates, it chips away at our confidence, investment appetite, and civic pride. Aucklanders start to lose belief in what is possible here.
But belief can be rebuilt. Auckland remains one of the world’s most liveable cities, a place of creativity, culture and natural beauty, and the beating heart of New Zealand’s economy. What we need now is a cohesive narrative that reflects those strengths and unites business, government, iwi and community behind a shared vision for our city’s future, one that lifts our sights and positions Auckland confidently as New Zealand’s global gateway city
A time for renewal
After 15 years as a Super City, the recent State of the City report, supported by Deloitte and Auckland Council, benchmarked our progress. It found enduring strengths in liveability, culture and resilience, alongside persistent challenges in productivity, skills, and infrastructure. Net migration to Auckland has rebounded strongly. The City Rail Link will soon transform urban mobility and mode shift. Major investments in film, technology, and data infrastructure are injecting new energy into our economy and Auckland’s innovation and tech ecosystem is emerging as a genuine growth engine
The findings are clear: Auckland’s future success depends on a long-term agenda anchored in collaboration and ambition and fuelled by a bold narrative that builds confidence, belief, and momentum.
The power of a shared story
Globally successful cities have something in common: a clear narrative that aligns local pride with global competitiveness. Sydney calls itself a “City of Opportunity”, Melbourne a “Creative Capital”, and Singapore a “Smart Nation”. Each signals confidence, clarity and intent.
Auckland needs its own version, one that celebrates our diversity, natural assets and entrepreneurial spirit; that reflects mana whenua perspectives; and that positions us as a globally connected, innovative, and sustainable city at the heart of the New World and a place where opportunity is truly within reach.
This narrative will:
- Make innovation, talent and world-class education visible strengths of Auckland’s future proposition.
- Restore pride at home by giving Aucklanders a shared story to believe in.
- Strengthen our global reputation by articulating Auckland’s role as New Zealand’s gateway.
- Inspire collective action by aligning leadership across sectors and mobilising resources behind shared goals.
As we near completion of the City Rail Link, convention centre and major data-centre investments, the physical foundations for renewal are forming. What’s missing is the story to match and the coordinated action to bring that story to life.
From fragmentation to alignment
The Committee for Auckland is convening partners across business, iwi, government, and civic sectors to shape that vision and to articulate it through the Auckland Narrative. Koi Tū, the Centre for Informed Futures, will serve as research partner along with our city’s universities, whose role in positioning Auckland as a leading student and talent destination is central to our long-term competitiveness, and a broad coalition of leaders has already signalled support.
This work complements the proposed Auckland Deal between central and local government, offering a platform for long-term planning, devolved powers and shared accountability.
Our goal is to move from fragmentation to alignment, from criticism to collaboration. Because Auckland’s success is not a zero-sum game. When Auckland thrives, New Zealand thrives. Our ability to attract investment, talent, and opportunity lifts the entire nation.
If we want to see headlines that reflect confidence and ambition, we must write them not just with words, but through shared vision and action.
By weaving mana whenua leadership and Auckland’s cultural richness into a shared story, we can present to the world a confident and authentic city that reflects who we are and what we stand for, supported by an ecosystem that deliberately curates innovation, creativity and growth across sectors
Now is the time for belief, courage and united leadership. Auckland’s next chapter starts with a shared story and the collective commitment to shape it together.
Committee for Auckland is an independent network of leaders committed to shaping Auckland’s long-term success for the benefit of all New Zealand.
